    1. 13 Days Northwest and Halong Bay 13 Days On Motorbiking Tour

      Day 1: Hanoi Motorbiking Tour – Mai Chau. ~160 km, ~6 h.

Once out of the Red River Delta, which brims with traditional farming activity, we pass through limestone monoliths and into foothills populated by Muong people. We head straight at the main range before breaching a high and beautiful forested pass, which descends into the hidden valley of Mai Chau where we spend the night with friends in a traditional Thai stilt house in Poom Coong village.

Day 2: Mai Chau Motorbiking Tour – Son La. ~200 km, ~8 h.

On good road looking high over distant mountains we head up into a forested region populated by H’mong people before descending into a mountainous tea-growing region. Soon after we follow a long valley floor covered in a sea of rice surrounded by Black Thai villages all the way to Son La with its bargain-filled market. Sleep in a hotel.

Day 3: Son La Motorbiking Tour – Lai Chau. ~200 km, ~8 h.

15 passes. Very nice road and stunning landscape. Probably the most beautiful journey of the whole trip even the road is in poor condition. Sleep in Lan Anh Hotel.

Day 4: Boating on the Black river. ~6 h boating.

Lai Chau is where the Da river and Nam Na river meet. The occasion to go downstream to meet local people. We propose a picnic to have one complete day of relaxation and to discover this wild area.

Day 5: Lai Chau Motorbiking Tour – Tam Duong. ~150 km, ~7 h.

The most demanding and remote section of the drive takes us upstream along the left side of a Black River tributary through forest on a bumpy dirt road past isolated pockets of Tay, Thai, H’mong and Man peoples before breaching a pass to enter the Tam Duong plain, which is covered in shark’s teeth like limestone karst.

We could visit a Mang village near Sin Ho, the guide will buy some food to give to the head of the village, and he later distributes our donations to the villagers. We stay O/N at Phuong Thanh Hotel.

      Day 6: Tam Duong Motorbiking Tour – Sapa. ~100 km, ~5 h.

Tam Duong market in the morning. There are colourful Montargnard groups living in Tam Duong: Black H’mong and Dzao. ~10 am: beautiful drive at slow pace on bumpy road to Sapa. We will have a big breakfast because there is nothing to eat on the way, just us with the wildness. We stay O/N in Cat Cat Hotel.

      Day 7: Sapa – Bac Ha. ~90 km, ~4 h.

The ride from Sapa to Bac Ha takes about 3 hours, down from Sapa to Lao Cai (34 km) and up to Bac Ha (70 km) with stunning landscape. We check in Dang Khoa Hotel and have lunch. In the afternoon, we trek to Lung Phinh village. Stay overnight in Bac Ha.

Day 8: Bac Ha Motorbiking Tour – Coc Ly – Bac Ha. ~80 km, ~3 h.

We could visit the village of Ban Pho to meet the association of the H’mong women who do some beautiful craft there.

Then we propose to go down from the plateau of Bac Ha to join a small road, which skirts the Chay river from where we go up towards China, to the village of Coc Ly. It is the occasion to meet the various ethnic villages: H’mong, Phu La, and Tay.

Day 9: Bac Ha Motorbiking Tour – Luc Yen Motorbiking Tour – Vu Linh. ~180 km, ~6 h.

We start from Bac Ha and ride down to Luc Yen. Ride to Vu Linh in about 2 hours around the lake on small road lined by palm trees and scenic mountain views. It will be dark already. The welcome is exceptional and we hope you will not be too much tired.

      Day 10: Vu Linh Motorbiking Tour – Hanoi. ~200 km, ~7 h.

Dao market in the morning. Pass through the lake with motorbike by boat. Come back to Hanoi by Song Thao. Very nice road.

Day 11: Hanoi Motorbiking Tour – Bai Chay Motorbiking Tour – Halong Bay. ~170 km, ~4 h.

The road from Hanoi to Bai Chay (former name of the present Halong city) is easy and sealed all the way. Promenade along the coast in Halong City. A junk is waiting for us to cruise in Halong Bay. Lunch with seafood on the boat. Boating to Thien Cung cave, fishing village and then through myriads of limestone to Ba Trai Dao (Three Peach Fruit Islet). Swimming and sleep here.

Day 12: Halong Bay Motorbiking Tour – Cat Ba. Boating.

Cruise to Cat Ba. Cat Ba is the far end of Halong Bay. Cat Ba still live from the resource that the sea offers. The tourism is developed and of high quality. The Cat Ba Bay is a condensed of Halong Bay, its labyrinth of limestone so dense that it is difficult to imagine we are on the sea.

We created this itinerary – the floating village Van Gia. They are our personal friends and the relation with them is intimate, even knowing that some companies now also pass through there.

Last but not least, Monkey Island (Cat Dua Islet) was totally ignored by mass tourism when we propose to stop there. It has got nothing special beside the fact that there is nobody except monkeys and one family who takes care of their security.

Arrive Cat Ba and check in Quang Duc Hotel, the first family hotel in Cat Ba. Take a sampan to the floating restaurant for dinner.

Day 13: Cat Ba Motorbiking Tour – Hai Phong Motorbiking Tour – Hanoi. ~120 km, ~3 h.

Promenade along the coast or take the bus to Cat Ba national park. Ferry at 1.30 pm to Hai Phong. Arrive at Bind station at 4 pm. The bus is waiting to take us back to Hanoi on Highway 5. We estimate that you arrive in Hanoi at 6 pm.

General rules for motorbike riding in Vietnam & Other country

It is claimed that riding motorbike in Vietnam & other country is not easy, especially for the inexperienced ones. However, it would be much easier for motorcyclists if they follow the rules and traffic laws of Vietnam & other country rigidly. To ensure that you have a safe motorcycle trip and lifetime experience in Vietnam, there are some regulations that you need to bear in mind:

    • Helmet is a compulsory equipment for motorbike riding
    • You should use the high-quality helmet which was certified by traffic safety management bureaus or helmets following international standards. If you use the cheap helmet, it could be dangerous in case of injuries and accidents.
    • In Vietnam, we follow the right hand side rule of traffic
    • Be confident and decisive when riding. Don’t freak out or be nervous.
    • Ride carefully and control the speed in different circumstances.
    • In Vietnam & other country, it is acceptable in using horn. Therefore, using it smartly because it could help you avoid undesirable cases. In some routes, there might be blind corners or crossroads, so it would be useful to utilize horn.
    • Give ways to bigger vehicles such as trucks, cars, buses or cart-transporting vehicles. It can ensure your safety and one thing for sure, they would take up for big parts of road surface.
    • Ride slowly when making a turn. It is important for you to push the light signals and sound so the left-behind vehicles are aware of your turn. However, you are advised to use your hand gesture and body language also because it would be more noticeable (waving hand when you want to turn left or right)
    • Show your respect and friendliness to people on the roads. Avoid conflicts with others because you don’t know who you are facing with.
    • Be friendly and chummy to other vehicle controllers when they greet you.
    • Be polite with the police. Don’t show out your abnormal or strange and suspicious behaviors on the road and the police will get no attention on you.
    • Drinking and riding should not be gone along.
